ANF presents proposals for better health in Portugal

The proposals put forward by the National Association of Pharmacies (ANF) aim to generate improved health outcomes and enhance the well-being and quality of life of the Portuguese population.

By Ana Rita Cunha

The ANF has outlined a set of contributions for the 17th Legislature, designed to strengthen the role of pharmacies in transforming people’s health journeys, while also supporting the sustainability of both the healthcare system and the pharmacy network.

The Association intends to deepen the discussion of these proposals with the newly elected representatives, following their initial presentation to political parties during the run-up to the elections held on May 18th.

Some of the proposals, under the banner “There’s More Health in the Pharmacy”, were included in the electoral programmes of the parties standing for election—highlighting the broad recognition of the importance of the pharmacy network to the country.

The inclusion of community pharmacies in the development of healthcare, social, and territorial responses is seen as crucial to improving health outcomes and enhancing population well-being.

These are the priority proposals for achieving Better Health in Portugal:

  1. Pharmacy intervention in cases of minor acute illness
  2. Pharmaceutical support in the renewal of chronic medication
  3. Participation in national screening programmes and rapid testing for infections
  4. Expansion of pharmacy-led vaccination services
  5. Development of digital communication and information-sharing channels between healthcare professionals
  6. Enhancing the attractiveness of the national market and improving access to medicines
  7. Review of the incentive model for dispensing generic medicines through pharmacies
  8. Support for maintaining pharmacies in low-population-density areas
