The capillarity of the pharmacy network is one of the sector's distinctive assets. This is only possible through the balanced distribution of pharmacies throughout the country, including in less densely populated areas, where pharmacies are often the only healthcare unit accessible to the population.
The economic sustainability of pharmacies, particularly those located in less densely populated areas, is fundamental to guaranteeing the network's capacity to respond. That's why the ANF is committed to promoting and defending it, both through associative initiatives such as the Pharmacy Territorial Cohesion Programme and through interventions with external stakeholders.
The strength of the pharmaceutical sector must be based on the implementation of support measures that guarantee equality and fairness in access to medicines, other technologies and healthcare throughout the country, as well as the contractualization of pharmaceutical services by the SNS.
ANF thus promotes a sustainable pharmacy model, in which the network is a strategic asset for the country, fully integrated into the health system and social responses, with an impact on health outcomes, accessibility and the population's quality of life.
Closer pharmacy, easier health
The participation of pharmacies in the 2023/2024 Seasonal Vaccination Campaign halved the average distance between the population and the nearest vaccination point, but it was in the municipalities where the reduction in distance was greatest that vaccination coverage grew the most.
