Health Ethics Committee for Portuguese Pharmacies

The National Association of Pharmacies (ANF) aims to strengthen and highlight the strategic contribution of all work carried out within community pharmacies to the promotion and development of scientific research, reinforcing their role as key hubs for healthcare innovation.

It is in this context that the Health Ethics Committee for Portuguese Pharmacies (CESFP) was established, with the aim of promoting and supporting ethically responsible, rigorous and socially relevant research, tailored to the specific characteristics of the community pharmacy sector.

The CESFP is a collegial, multidisciplinary, independent advisory body governed by Decree-Law No. 80/2018 of 15 October, which establishes the principles and rules governing the establishment, composition, powers and operation of ethics committees operating within healthcare institutions and other institutions where clinical research is conducted.

The CESFP’s main responsibilities are to:

a) Analyse and reflect on ethical and bioethical issues relating to the conduct of scientific research;

b) Contribute to the conduct of scientific research, particularly in the field of health sciences, in accordance with recognised ethical standards, including respect for the dignity, rights, integrity, safety and well-being of research participants;

c) Promote compliance with ethical principles in pharmacy practice, particularly in the provision of healthcare by pharmacies.

The CESFP holds monthly plenary meetings, following a previously established agenda and giving priority to the review and approval of the opinions requested, in accordance with the provisions of its Internal Regulations.
